Nanawale (pronounced Nana-vah-lee) Estates is located in the Puna District on the east side of the Big Island of Hawaii. Nanawale is less than three miles from historic Pahoa Village, 16 miles from Kea'au (one of the fastest growing areas in the State of Hawaii), and approximately 30 miles from Hilo, the second largest city in the state.

Nanawale Estates had a population of 1,073 with 433 housing units; a land area land area of 1.91 sq. miles; a water area of 0 sq. miles; and a population density of 560.49 people per sq. mile for Census 2000. Nanawale Estates is located in Hawaii County at latitude 19.506 and longitude -154.912. The elevation is 420 feet.

Within an approximate 10 mile radius you can find the tide pools and warm ponds of Kapoho and the surfing beach and boat ramp at Poho'iki.  The beautiful black sands at Kehena Beach are not much further along the Red Road. Nanawale also adjoins the world-famous Lava Tree State Park.

Nanawale Estates is zoned Residential.  Although the average Nanawale lot is 8,040 sq. ft. with dimensions of 60'X 134', some lots are as large as 16,300 sq. ft. All lots have existing  "paid up" electric and telephone hookup.  This applies even on the streets where there are no homes yet and consequently no electric/telephone poles.  The water system is by catchment and the sewer system is by septic. Some streets are paved, and others are cinder.

Nanawale Estates does have CC&R's, an active homeowner's association, and a swimming pool. Nearby Pahoa town has a first class Olympic-sized community swimming pool  as well (and several restaurants, banks, health food, and an Island Trust Properties real estate office!)  The current Nanawale Community Association dues & fees are $70.00 per year, and include road maintenance.  Real Property Taxes vary, but average about $135.00 per year for a standard sized lot.   Half are paid in February and half in August.

The weather in the lower Puna District, where Nanawale is located, is literally the best of all worlds. Because the trade winds come from the east, much of the east side of the island gets quite a bit of rain. For some reason, however, the lower Puna District along the coast, where Nanawale is located, gets less rainfall than other parts of East Hawaii. The result is plenty of rain (mostly at night) to keep things lush and green and to keep your catchment tanks full, but plenty of bright and sunny days. The true definition of paradise!
